Beat the Heat with Rogue Appliances Repair: Common Signs of a Failing Fridge.

Updated: Sep 1, 2023

The primary purpose of a refrigerator in our homes is straightforward - to keep the interior cool while excluding external warmth. This operation is a clear application of the Second Law of Thermodynamics, which essentially asserts that heat can only transfer from a hotter object to a less hot one. When you place food inside your fridge, the appliance absorbs the heat from your items using a refrigerant. This warmed refrigerant is then cycled to the exterior of the fridge, where it dissipates its heat into the surrounding air.

Considering the health and safety of our families, especially given the intense heat we've been experiencing this year in Louisiana, it's crucial to recognize early warning signs of a malfunctioning refrigerator to protect our food and finances. Additionally, towards the end of this article, I'll share some preemptive tips that can help you mitigate issues before they escalate, fortifying your position against unexpected appliance troubles.

The first thing that customers often notice when their refrigerator isn't functioning correctly is a non-operational ice maker. For an ice maker to cycle through a harvest, it needs to be at or below 15 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature change might go unnoticed by unsuspecting individuals, but not by the ice maker, which will abruptly cease functioning under such conditions.

The next common symptom of a faulty refrigerator is a strange noise. The key here is to identify the source of this unfamiliar sound, as these noises often precede a warming fridge. Here are some scenarios to consider:

1. *Rapid thumping or grinding noise*: This could indicate an issue with either the condenser fan or the evaporator fan. If the sound comes from inside the fridge, you may have an ice buildup problem, with the noise being produced by the fan hitting the accumulated ice. If it originates from the rear bottom, then the condenser fan might be malfunctioning.

2. *Clicking followed by a quiet compressor*: This could point to an issue with the overload protector. Acting like a fuse, the overload protector shuts off when the compressor becomes overheated to prevent damage.

3. *Rhythmic and constant clicking*: This sound, typically heard from inside the unit, may indicate an issue with the temperature damper. This component works in sequence with the control board, regulating the cold airflow from the freezer to the fridge.

These are just a few things you can keep an ear out for to help prevent significant refrigerator problems.

Next, let's discuss water leaks, which typically manifest as water pooling on the floor at the front of the fridge. This issue is primarily caused by a clog in the drain line. Over time, warm humid air enters the fridge and the moisture collects on the evaporator, restricting air circulation. The fridge's heater is designed to manage this by melting the ice, which then drains down to the compressor area. However, if the drain is blocked, the water will start flowing forward towards the door instead. This can eventually lead to the door failing to seal properly, allowing more humid air to enter and causing your fridge to heat up.

If you notice any of these issues, it's best to contact a professional. Like most things, small problems have a tendency to evolve into more significant issues if left unattended, which can result in more money spent.
